MUN in Bangkok, Thailand
By Debby Zunta
Wednesday, November 13, 2019. I started the trip at 0.30 am. I went by train from Jember to Sidoarjo and then took Gocar to Juanda Airport. Juanda Airport is in Surabaya but nearer to Sidoarjo. About 6.30 am I arrived at the airport. My flight was at 9.50 am. I checked the departure time on the monitor and the gate hadn’t opened at that time. I saw an electronic check in counter, but when I asked the CS, she said it couldn’t work. Disappointed!
This was my first flight to a foreign country. I really got nervous with what would happen to me. I was all alone by myself. I sharpened my eyes and ears to get the right information so as not to get lost. It needed a transit in Singapore at Changi Airport. The transit lasted about 2 and three quarter hours.
It was so confusing, you know. Changi Airport in Singapore was so big. It was really awesome to see all of that with so many unfamiliar people. “ Take a deep breath and keep calm, Deb. Read all the instructions. Huhh”
I didn’t know what the next step was. I followed all the instructions that I could read on the signages. I went to immigration counter at arrival hall. It was chaotic. I would have to meet my uncle outside. The immigration officer prohibited me to go outside because I only had about one and half hour to go. I might be late. I could only talk for a while with my uncle and continued with the next flight.
At the gate I saw someone looking a little bit familiar, I ever saw his face on instagram of MUN. I thought he was one of the committee members. He was talking with a girl. I really wanted to greet them to make friends, but they were too far away to make contact. I hoped I could meet them later.
On board the plane, I sat with a couple. Fortunately, they were kind. I asked about the immigration form that I didn’t understand; like what occupation was. LOL I really didn’t know. I couldn’t sleep during the flight. I got running nose. It was really uncomfortable.
After the plane landed in Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, Thailand, I walked as fast as I could hoping to meet the committee members but they were nowhere in sight. I was not sure whether there was airport assistance provided for me as I had gone by myself. I walked to the immigration and cleared it. My eyes were wide open and I saw the two committee members there. They were waiting for their baggages. I ran and called them.
“Excuse me, I am sorry are you guys from the committee of MUN? Emmm I am a delegate.”
“Actually, we are the chair?” said the girl.
But, whoever they were, thanked God, I got friends. I went to Prince Palace Hotel with them. The girl was Indonesian called Ms.Prili and the guy was Turkish called Mr.Tarik. And then came one more Indonesian, Mr. Eko. They talked a lot about MUN. For the beginner, Lucky for me that I had read the guide line so I understand what they were talking about.
Fyi, the committee was not providing me the hotel for that night. I was lucky that I met Ernita who had booked a room for me in a different hotel. So, after I reached Prince Palace Hotel, I moved to Bangkok City Hotel. The stupid thing that I did was I texted the wrong hotel in the grab application. It should be Bangkok City Hotel but I wrote Bangkok City Tower. When I confirmed with the driver, he couldn’t understand me. He only said “ Bangkok City..... eeee... Bangkok City..... ee..” it really made me frustrated. So, I wrote it in the google translate and show it to him. still, I had to pay double for it.
It was really a long trip for the day. But it was not as frightening as I had imagined before. It was really fun to know new things. I met my fellow Indonesians Ernita and Qintara in the hotel. I was so happy to know Bangkok for the first time.
The next episode would be the opening ceremony. It would be great. Look forward to it.
