MUN in Bangkok, Thailand
Part 1 - Preparation
for the MUN
Model United
Nation (MUN), for those who don’t know, is an event about simulation of the united nation meeting commitee. This was my first MUN participation. For sure, I knew nothing about MUN. I came to know about this from my classmate
who had become the
brand ambasador. There are so many kinds of MUN. If you are interested, please check it on Youtube.
My goal for
this event was simple.
I wanted to find out
for myself about my English
proficiency. I didn’t have any ambition to become a delegate of any country. Yes, of
course, all I want is to be a dentist. Politic
is not my cup of tea. Participants
had many purposes
joining this event. Some of them wanted the vacation, and others were really focus to become
delegates. But yes, who didn’t
want vacation?
How did I register for this? It was very easy. I only needed to go to the MUN website, filled up the
form and then paid the
registration fee. How to transfer the money? The registration fee was in USD. I could pay it by Paypal, credit
card, bank transfer, and Western
Union. I chose Western Union. I didn’t have any credit card nor paypal account. Actually I could pay by bank transfer but
I couldn’t cause it was
evening and I wished to enjoy the
10% discount. Fyi, there
was a tax imposed to remit money by Western Union.
After finishing the registration, I got my country and council allotment. I became the delegate of Barbados in UNESCO
council. Barbados? I sought all information about
Barbados from the
internet and I knew
Rihana came from that
Island. Who doesn’t know Rihana? An R &B singer. It is literally so small an island. Barbados, like Indonesia, is a tropical country.
As a newbie I
didn’t want to really
look like one. I started to learn the MUN from
Youtube and the most important
thing I had to do was
to read the guide book carefully. I learned all the vocabulary that were being used.
I read all the information on
instagram. I had to
know all of that.
The most
important thing beyond
all that, was
my passport. I made the passport in Jember which is not the city of my origin. So to get it, I had to ask for a referral letter from my faculty, to certify that I was
their student.
It was a big hassle to get permission
from my faculty to attend this
event. You know, it was really hard for dentistry sudents to join an event outside the academic studies. Surely, it was
hard. The first reason was
my tight schedule. I needed
to make all the calculations
so as not to miss too many lectures.
After all of
that bla bla bla administration things done, the last thing was to buy the flight tickets. You could buy them
everywhere. Because I am a lazy one, I bought them online using traveloka. Simple and then I was ready to fly to Bangkok, Thailand.
