A life beyond Dentistry - Travel to Ijen
By Debby Zunta
Being an ambitous girl makes me so tired. Compounding it, I am a perfectionist. These characteristics may cause me unpleasant anxiety. I realize my life is not only for academic pursuit. I have a family, friends, hobbies and maybe a relationship.
Going to new places is always a good thing. It is a sedative for me. Especially, if you go with your best friends. Three of my friends, Aida, Zizil and Sela, have the same interest as me - vacation. After the exam of the recent module we decided to go to a very well known place in east Java, Ijen.
On this trip, Sela invited her high school friends to join. They were boys: Fachril, Jimplek, Cekak, Satriyo, and Irsyad. It is dangerous to go only by ourselves as girls. It needs about two hours to go there.
We started the trip from Jember at 10 pm. It was a little bit rainy. As the BMKG platform claimed it will be fine weather, but most times the Accu weather said other things. We just got along for ten minutes and it was raining cats and dogs. The rain lasted too long for us to wait. We were reckless crashing it.
We stopped to rest many times. When we got closer, the way was very very dark and winding. I rode with Irsyad. I am a sleeping beauty and Irsyad was dumb. It seemed that words were very expensive to him. As a result, the journey was a quiet one. I fell asleep and almost fell off from the motorcycle. It was very dangerous.
It could be counted we started the trip at 12 in the night and arrived at the place at 4 am. It was too late to see the blue fire in the sulfur crater situated at 2386 meters above the sea level. I had to climb for about an hour. The weather was so cold. I bought along new pair of montain gloves looking more like muffs and also not forgetting the montain hat.
We chose to pray subuh first and ate some pop mie. We needed to fill our stomachs for energy and to keep our bodies warm. Some of us went to rest and slept. We started climbing up at 6 am.
Actually this was my first time climbing a mount. Because of my bag being too heavy, I moved along so slowly. Fachril offerred me help. It was so kind of him.
I hadn’t reached the peak and the scenery was already so very fantastic. Sometimes, I just stopped to take photos. One fact that I knew recently, there were so many foreign tourists. I come to realize that because there are only two places in this world having blue fires, Ijen and Islandia.
Some workers were making steps on the slope. I could imagine how difficult and tiring the many times the poor porter got to haul up the building materials. For me, it was really hard to go up. They were so friendly to us.
I saw some red berries there. One of workers gave me one. I tried it and it tasted so sour. However I was happy that I had eaten berry. Edelweiss was also beautiful, but we were prohibited to take it. It is a rare plant and protected by law. From what I observed, as we climbed higher up the plants decreased in numbers and the sulfur smell became more pungent.
Finally I reached the top, the scenery was really beautiful. I saw smoke wafting out from the crater and sometimes the fog covered it.

We spent about 2 hours there and had taken so many photos for making an unforgettable and beautiful memories. At about 9 O’clock, we went down. The weather became warmer than before. Some Bule (foreign tourist) greeted us. I asked them to take a photo together. They came from Germany. I have learned Deutch in my senior high school. But they didn’t understand when I said “ Ich heize Debi”, or whatever I tried. At that moment, I felt that all my efforts spent learning German for three years was all wasted.
Ijen is indeed is a beautiful place. I won’t be back again. But it urges me to go to other amazing places. I love traveling and I hope I could find a soulmate who loves it too. I think that’s all for me to talk about Ijen. I admire Ijen so much. Tell me if you have gone there or having any plan to go there.
